I read this book, Reader. It went on and on, word after word, and suddenly it was over. It was a collegiate Philip Roth novel with a Mary Sue protagonist. It was a wasted roman a clef. The theoretical construction of the novel failed to support the vapid characters. And then I threw the book to the floor at the description of the heroine’s “inner sheath”.
The best moment in the entire novel was when Mary Sue and not-DFW fought over the meaning of “I love you” in Barthes’ A Lover’s Discourse.
The Hairpin reviewed The Marriage Plot perfectly. Read the comments if you are also experiencing literary rage.
In other news, I just finished reading ยง6 of The Pale King and it is glorious.
